Texas Grasslands and Savannas Initiative
The Texas Grasslands and Savannas Initiative is an regional initiative between the Coastal Prairie Conservancy and partners that provides funding to private landowners to permanently protect their lands through conservation easements, and provide funds to help land owners manage and enhance habitat on private lands.
This initiative, funded through an award from the National Resources Conservation Service, focuses on the Coastal Prairie and Post Oak Savanna ecoregions that are threatened by increased development. NRCS has announced an award of $25 million for this initiative and the Coastal Prairie Conservancy will be negotiating a Project Agreement in 2024 and anticipates funding will be available in 2025. It focuses on a 16-county region.
The program helps private landowners preserve essential grassland bird habitat and promote the presence of pollinators, enhancing the overall biodiversity of these vital ecosystems. Conserving these lands today means safeguarding the rich biodiversity and cultural legacy of Texas for tomorrow.
