Land conservation is the heart of the Coastal Prairie Conservancy’s work, and we know that the urgent need to conserve land in the Greater Houston area is real. Houston’s growth is consuming thousands of acres of coastal prairie and the loss of these lands threatens the well-being of people and wildlife in the region.
The Coastal Prairie Conservancy is uniquely poised to increase the pace of conservation in the region. We know that the urgent need to conserve land in the Greater Houston area is real. As regional growth consumes the coastal prairie, the Coastal Prairie Conservancy is focused on strategic conservation areas and protects land through Conservation Agreements, Land Sales, & Land Donations.
We’re proud of our conservation work and all the ways these lands benefit Texas communities. Prairie grasses absorb and hold back floodwaters while sequestering carbon. Wetlands protect our water quality and quantity. Open and connected spaces help maintain the biodiversity of the coastal prairie and provide homes for wildlife. By keeping portions of the preserves in working lands, the organization is also helping preserve a way of life for farmers and ranchers. Many of these lands offer important recreational opportunities and boost nature tourism as well as impact our local economy by increasing neighboring property values and providing a cost-effective solution for flood damage reduction.
On the Katy Prairie in Harris, Ft. Bend, and Waller Counties, the Coastal Prairie Conservancy owns more than 13,500 acres and protects 5,000 acres through conservation agreements with private landowners. We are also working to protect coastal prairie in other Texas counties and through conservation agreements we protect over 12,000 acres in Brazoria, Galveston, Matagorda, and Jackson Counties.
