Prairie Partner: Baker Hughes

Over the past year, the generosity of the Baker Hughes Foundation has supported an important restoration project on the Katy Prairie Preserve. Our team took a parcel overrun by nonnatives and transformed it into vibrant grasslands, filled with colorful wildflowers and thriving wildlife. Nature-based climate solutions like prairie restoration are an investment in community health and resilience. From the beginning of this partnership, the Baker Hughes Foundation has demonstrated its profound commitment to the biodiversity of the coastal prairie and our communities who rely on its countless benefits.

In the year ahead, we are thrilled to commence new restoration work on the Indiangrass Preserve with continued support from the Baker Hughes Foundation. This 2,877-acre preserve is our hub of prairie activity with a 1 1/2 mile walking trail, a new nature trail, and a restored 55-acre showcase prairie open to the public.

The next phase of the Indiangrass Preserve restoration project will serve the community by allowing private landowners and organizations to see further examples of successful restoration in the region. Support from the Baker Hughes Foundation will enable our team to enhance grassland and wetland habitat, perform prescribed burns, improve the visitor experience on the Ann Hamilton Trail, plant native plants, and place nesting boxes for native grassland birds among other projects.

Thank you to the Baker Hughes Foundation for this incredible gift that will enhance the Indiangrass Preserve in the year to come. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting restoration project!
